One weather phenomenon which will always occur when flying across a front is a change in the
wind direction. Because the two air masses that are colliding have different temperatures and different characteristics, they also tend to have different wind directions, so crossing a front will almost always lead to a change in wind direction and a change in temperature.

unstable, moist air. The requirements for a thunderstorm are: moist unstable air mass and a lifting action.

See lessWhich weather phenomenon is always associated with a thunderstorm?
Lightning. While heavy rain can happen during thunderstorms, lightning is always associated with thunderstorm activity.

See lessWhich weather phenomenon signals the beginning of the mature stage of a thunderstorm?
Precipitation beginning to fall. There are three phases to a thunderstorm, Cumulus stage (where the storm builds up), the Mature stage (greatest intensity, lots of updraft, rain hitting the ground), and the Dissipating stage (predominantly downdraft and the storm dies down).

See lessWhat conditions are necessary for the formation of thunderstorms?
High humidity, lifting force, and unstable conditions. Rote memory item: Thunderstorms need high humidity, lifting force, and unstable conditions.

See lessWhat are the characteristics of stable air?
Poor visibility and steady precipitation. Stable air is characterized by stratiform clouds and fog, continuous precipitation, smooth air, and fair to poor visibility. Use the attached cheat sheet for reference.

See lessWhat are characteristics of a moist, unstable air mass?
Turbulence and showery precipitation. Unstable air is characterized by cumuliform clouds and fog, showery precipitation, rough air, and good visibility. Use the attached cheat sheet for reference.
