Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)

Not so fast, think first. Do it quickly to get it over with. It could happen to me.

It could happen to me. It cannot be that bad. It will not happen to me.

The FAA. The pilot. The medical examiner.

Someone else is responsible. What is the use? I am not helpless.

Invulnerability. Machismo. Impulsivity.

Mechanical malfunction. Structural failure. Human error.

I can do it. Taking chances is foolish. Nothing will happen.

Follow the rules. Rules do not apply in this situation. I know what I am doing.

Application of stress management and risk element procedures. Situational awareness, problem recognition, and good judgment. The mental process of analyzing all information in a particular situation and making a timely decision on what action to take.

Anti Authority, Impulsivity, Macho, Resignation, and Invulnerability. Poor situational awareness, snap judgments, and lack of a decision making process. Poor risk management and lack of stress management.
